Congressman Albio Sires and Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner Statements on the Passing of NJ Supreme Court Marie L Garibaldi

New Jersey- “The State of New Jersey has lost a devoted civil servant in the passing of former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Marie L. Garibaldi,” Congressman Sires said in a statement. “Justice Garibaldi was the first woman to be appointed to the New Jersey Supreme Court. She was also the first woman to serve as President of the New Jersey State Bar Association. Justice Garibaldi was a long time resident of Weehawken, New Jersey where she served as the Chairwoman of the Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center in Weehawken. She also served as the Weehawken Municipal Court Judge from 1973 to 1975.”

“Justice Garibaldi paved the way and will always be remembered for her years of dedicated service to the State of New Jersey and to the Township of Weehawken.”

Weehawken Mayor also added the following statement:

It is with great sadness that Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner and the Township Council announce the passing of Weehawken resident and former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Marie L. Garibaldi. Justice Garibaldi is the first woman to serve on the New Jersey Supreme Court. Appointed by Governor Thomas Kean in 1982, Justice Garibaldi served on the Court until her retirement on February 1, 2000. Justice Garibaldi was also the first woman to serve as President of the New Jersey State Bar Association. Locally, Justice Garibaldi was the Chairwoman of the Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center in Weehawken. Justice Garibaldi served as the Weehawken Municipal Court Judge from 1973 to 1975. She also served as a trustee of St. Peter’s College in Jersey City.

Justice Garibaldi will always be remembered for the impact that she made on the New Jersey Supreme Court and the Township of Weehawken. The Township of Weehawken expresses our deepest sympathy to the family of Justice Marie L. Garibaldi.
