JERSEY CITY, NJ – Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari sent a statement regarding a critical accident near Kennedy Blvd., in West New York.
“At approximately 7:30 PM last night, West New York Police and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a pedestrian struck on 62nd street, near Kennedy Blvd., on the report of a pedestrian struck by vehicle.
Nicolas Valencia, 72, of West New York was crossing 62nd Street when he was struck by a 2000 Nissan Altima, driven by Francis Clerie, 22, also of West New York.
Mr. Valencia suffered a head injury and was treated by West New York EMS and Jersey City Medical Center Paramedics and then transported to Hackensack Medical Center in serious condition. The Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the crash.
As of now, no charges have been filed and investigators are reviewing video from a nearby building and analyzing evidence found at the scene.
As of 7:00 AM this morning, the victim had been downgraded to stable condition and is conscious and talking.
We do not believe speed or cell phone use are contributing factors to this crash.”
