HOBOKEN – A 38-year-old man is facing six charges after he allegedly hit several parked cars while driving while under the influence of medication and attacked nearby pedestrians, officials said.
According to the Hoboken Police Department, at around 6:00 p.m. on August 6th, Michael Melendez crashed his vehicle into three parked cars in the area of 161 7th Street. At that point, Officers responded to the scene and found Melendez sitting on the curb. Officer Rotondi requested an ambulance for Melendez as he appeared to be under the influence of medication. Based on his physical state and operation of a vehicle, he was placed under arrest for DWI. While Officer Rontondi was on scene, a nearby witness stated he was victim of assault by Melendez. Melendez allegedly attempted to strike the man with “the club” from his car, a security device used to lock the steering wheel in place.
According to the victim, Melendez crash his vehicle and became irate. He exited the vehicle and tried to attack another person that was riding a bike nearby. While watching this unfold the victim told Melendez he was calling the Police. Melendez became more irate and began to throw garbage cans at the victim. The victim tried to calm him down but Melendez grabbed the club and began swinging at him.
There were no injuries reported as a result of the crash and assault.
Melendez was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated in a school zone, unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, reckless driving, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. He was later released to a responsible party.
