GUTTENBERG – A 48-year-old Guttenberg woman was pronounced dead after she was struck and run over by a vehicle last Tuesday, officials said.

According to Michael Makarski, a spokesman for the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 7:20 a.m. on July 14th, 48-year-old Gertrudis Pena was crossing Bergenline Avenue at 68th Street when a Ford Escape that was turning left from 68th Street struck her.

“Sheriff’s Crash Investigators have determined that Mrs. Pena was within the crosswalk when she was struck and it appears she was dragged under the car and driven over.” – Sheriff Frank X. Schillari

The driver of the car, Dominick Azzolini, age 81 of Rutherford NJ, stopped at the scene.

When Guttenberg Police arrived on scene, they found Mrs. Pena lying in the north bound lane of Bergenline Avenue, she appeared conscious but was not responsive. She was then rushed by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where she underwent emergency surgery and was listed in extremely critical condition – her family is by her side. She passed away at around 3:22 p.m.

” Our investigators are looking at video footage from nearby businesses and are talking to several witnesses. No charges have been filed at this time and the crash is still under investigation.” – Sheriff Frank X. Schillari
