Kearny Man Arrested On Marijuana and Pill Distribution Charges

KEARNY – A 25 year old male from Kearny was arrested Tuesday night after police found marijuana and blue pills on him, officials said.

On February 3, 2015 at around 10:30 p.m., police observed a 1997 Toyota in the area of Chestnut St. and Liberty St. Police recognized the vehicle from an arrest made last month. The vehicle belonged to Jon Verastegui, 25, of Kearny, who was arrested in January after vice detectives held a cocaine distribution investigation.

Police were suspicious of a drug transaction and confronted the vehicle to find Verastegui stuffing an object down his pants. Verastegui was asked to step out of the vehicle and place his hands in air view, which he failed to do. Verastegui has been known to be armed and police had to forcibly remove one of his hands from his waistband for their safety, officials said.

Police recovered a large plastic bag containing approximately 11 grams of suspected marijuana. Upon arriving to headquarters, police found a substantial amount blue bills on the seat of the patrol car, “they were falling out of Jon’s pants as he walked from patrol car,” officials told us.

In addition to the 11 grams of marijuana recovered, police seized 26 Clonazepam and $379 in currency.

Verastegui was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within 1,000 ft. of a school zone, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within 500 ft. of a public park, possession of clonazepam, possession of clonazepam with intent to distribute, possession of clonazepam with intent to distribute within 1,000 ft. of a school zone, possession of clonazepam with intent to distribute within 500 ft. of a public park, obstructing admin law, and resisting arrest. Verastegui is in Hudson County Jail and his bail was set at $50,000 full with no 10% option, possibly due to his prior arrest, officials said.
