KEARNY – According to Chief Dowie of Kearny Police Department, police are conducting an ongoing marijuana distribution investigation. This investigation led to the arrest of two individuals on April 17th.
According to the police report, at around 4:00 p.m. on April 17th, Police observed a male enter a 1997 Nissan in the area of Schuyler Ave. and Tappan St. Shortly after, he exited the vehicle and placed a plastic bag in his pocket. He then continued on foot until he was stopped by police and confronted about their observations. Police recovered the plastic bag containing suspected CDS.
The Nissan was stopped by Police in the area of Devon St. and Tappan St. The driver, 24-year-old Rosa Feliciano of Harrison, was known by the police from past investigations, Dowie stated. The vehicle had a strong odor of raw marijuana and there were several empty small zip lock bags, the police report says.The passenger, 22-year-old Kearny resident, Shawn Mendez was known by police to have multiple outstanding criminal warrants. He was observed placing an object in his pants but was quickly placed under arrest.
Feliciano admitted to engaging in a drug transaction and turned over $45 in drug sale proceeds but during a search incident to arrest, $887 was confiscated as proceeds of drug sales. It was also discovered that Feliciano had two active motor vehicle related warrants out of Wood-Ridge and Newark in the amounts of $205 and $200. She was placed under arrest.
All three individuals were taken to headquarters to be processed.
Based on the strong odor of raw marijuana emanating from the car, a search warrant of the vehicle was granted by Judge Paul Depasqual and 13 additional plastic bags containing suspected marijuana were recovered.
Rosa Feliciano was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession with intent to distribute on or near a school, possession with intent to distribute near a park, and on her two active warrants.
Shawn Mendez was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and on his 4 open criminal warrants out Harrison and Kearny. Feliciano and Mendez were transported to Hudson County Jail.
22-year-old Jose Matos of Kearny was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was later released on summons.
