New York man arrested after making a U Turn and driving wrong way at the Holland Tunnel


At 1:10 a.m. today, Jamie Proano, a 29 yr-old man from Woodside Queens was arrested on the New York side of the Holland Tunnel for DWI, Reckless endangerment, Reckless Driving & Fleeing a Police Officer in a motor vehicle.

The subject driving a 2012 Nissan entered the south tube of the Holland Tunnel westbound in the wrong direction from the NY side and continued for about a quarter of a mile. Fortunately, traffic was held at the time on the NJ side for Port Authority maintenance. No traffic was in the tunnel at that juncture.

The vehicle was intercepted and blocked by a maintenance vehicle prior to encountering oncoming traffic which had been released to proceed eastbound. The suspect’s vehicle then turned around in the tunnel and exited in Manhattan where a patrol vehicle attempted to a stop it from driving on. The suspect drove around the police vehicle and refused to stop. The suspect’s auto then came to a stop at the red light near the Holland tunnel entrance on the rotary. Officers approached the vehicle, the driver then pulled away and drove around two marked NYPD sectors which were in the intersection.

Additional units arrived and the vehicle was subsequently stopped at the intersection of Varick St & Laight St. Port Authority Police noted the suspect exhibited a strong odor of alcohol about his person and his eyes were watery and bloodshot. His speech was unclear. The subject was placed under arrest.

He refused to submit to a breath test.
