Robert Fulton Middle School Student Awarded Grand Prize by Mayor Sacco
NORTH BERGEN, NJ – Thousands of children from North Bergen schools, participated in the fourth annual “Go Green – Save Green” Poster Contest sponsored by the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority and the Board of Education. Art teachers from all schools worked with students in the following four age-grouped categories, 1st-3rd, 4th-6th, 7th & 8th and 9th-12th to create the artwork. The contest culminated last night as the Grand Prize winner was crowned during a pizza and cupcake party which took place at North Bergen High School.
The Grand Prize winner was Karen Gomez, an eighth grader from Robert Fulton School, who received an iPad as first prize. Diane’s artwork shows two different scenes. The scene on the left is how the world would look if it was cared for properly. The scene on the right, on the other hand, is a toxic and destroyed environment. Both images contrast and remind us that we must take care of our planet. Her truly impressive work is now also displayed on an NBMUA recycling truck that travels through town almost every day.
“I would like to congratulate Karen on her magnificent work, along with everyone that participated in this year’s contest,” said Mayor Sacco. “This project is unique and extraordinary because it teaches our kids and reminds everyone be more eco-friendly. I commend te MUA’s mission and their initiative to find new ways to protect and care for our environment.”
In addition to the Grand Prize winner, three first place finishers each won a Kindle Fire, four second place winners won a $100 dollar gift card, and four third place winners received $50 gift card. Another 80 young artists earned an Honorable Mention and received a gift card for Brick Oven Pizza restaurant in North Bergen. About 250 students and parents attended the party.
“The North Bergen MUA is very proud of this project,” said NBMUA Executive Director Frank Pestana. “I would like to thank Mayor Sacco, our staff and the entire school district for making the “Go Green-Save Green Poster Contest a success year after year.”
The students’ artwork is featured in over 10,000 calendars that were distributed in every school and will also be given away at the township’s yearly Winterfest celebration, which will take place on Thursday, December 3rd.
Also in attendance were Superintendent of Schools Dr. George Solter and school administrators, art teachers, Board of Education members, Recycling Coordinator John Shaw and Recycling Program Aide Tom Stampe.
