Possible 10-year sentence for Jersey City man who had ear bitten off and was hit by a car during fight

JERSEY CITY – A Jersey City man who had his ear bitten off and was hit by a car during a fight could be carrying out a sentence of up to 10 years for the drugs found in his vehicle the night of the incident, officials said.

On April 2nd at around 11:09 p.m., officers responded to the northwest corner of Fulton Ave. and Kennedy Blvd. on report of a street fight. When they arrived, they separated two males who were fighting and quickly noticed that one male was heavily bleeding from his left ear. Once separated, the officers noticed a significant laceration to the upper portion of the males ear with the upper lobe hanging by a piece of skin, according to police reports.

34-year-old Harry Alex of Jersey City was inebriated and although mostly incoherent, he stated that he was jumped by, “Haitian haters,” and that his ear was bitten off, according to police reports. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center.

The other male, 35-year-old Ocean Degand of Jersey City stated that he was assaulted by Harry Alexis.

A concerned citizen informed police that the incident occurred on Westminster Ave. At the location, officers observed damage to several vehicles. According to police reports, Ocean Degand entered his vehicle and purposely drove into Harry Alexis while crashing into numerous other vehicles.

Recovered in plain view from Harry Alexis’s vehicle was 65 envelopes of suspected heroin and four vials of suspected cocaine.

Both Harry Alexis and Ocean Degand were placed under arrest at around 12:30 a.m. based on video observations.

Harry Alexis was charged with possession of CDS, possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of school property and within 500 feet of public property, while Ocean Demand was charged with criminal attempted homicide and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Degand’s bail was set at $250,000. He made his first court on the above charges on Monday via video link from Hudson County Jail.

Harry Alexis, who is in a wheelchair and has a cast on his leg, also made a court appearance in CJP on Monday. While in court, Alexis said he needs surgery to both ears and told the judge “I had no drugs. Somebody put the drugs in my car..I’m begging you please. I’m in pain here,” as he argued unsuccessfully for a lower bail, NJ.com reported.

Alexis may be carrying out a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and Demand, up to 20 years upon conviction.
