Turnpike Construction Update for the area of 14A Toll Plaza

NJ Turnpike improvement project is underway in Hudson County

Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and its contractors have provided new information to the City of Bayonne about the reconstruction of the area around the 14A toll plaza.

In the toll plaza, new east toll lane construction is continuing. Renovation work is continuing at the existing toll plaza building.  During the weekend of January 29-31, northbound Avenue E between 52nd Street and the toll plaza will be reduced to a single lane of traffic, from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29, to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 31, for paving operations. Ground improvements in this area will continue.

At the ramps between the toll plaza and the Hudson County Extension Bridge, widening work continues.  Local street-level work on Kennedy Boulevard and Avenue C bridges will continue.  Single daytime lane closures will be used.  Work continues on a new variable message sign at the base of the Newark Bay Bridge.

The eastbound side of East 53rd Street, which is located between Broadway and Avenue E, remains closed for a six-month period.  Motorists will still be able to access the westbound side of East 53rd Street from the 14A toll plaza.  Access to TD Bank, QuickChek, and Value City Furniture will continue, and those enterprises will remain open for business. Local residents will still be able to use 49th Street and other eastbound side streets to gain access to the Turnpike via Avenue E.

In a related development, the traffic flow on the portion of West 53rd Street between Broadway and Avenue C has been reversed from eastbound to westbound for approximately six months. The reversal of the traffic flow on that portion of West 53rd Street took place, in order to relieve congestion at 53rd Street and Broadway.

On the connector bridge that links the 14A toll plaza to Port Jersey Boulevard, there is no current work to report.

Work on a thirty-inch water main on East 50th Street and Avenue E will continue through the week of February 1.  Daily traffic detours and traffic shifts will be used to facilitate the work from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Deep foundation work will continue on Avenue E at 51st Street.  Construction will continue on a new bridge column and pier cap. A traffic roundabout will be constructed in this area.

Deep sewer relocation work continues at the Pulaski Street jughandle.  Drainage and other utility work will continue on Pulaski Street.  Beginning the week of January 18, temporary traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of Route 440 and Pulaski Street.

In the ramp area east of Route 440, ground work continues, including the installation of wick drains and concrete columns. Deep sewer relocation work will continue through February 2016.
